In a recent settlement case, Google agreed to pay the sum of $11 millon to 227 job applicants who accused the company of employment age discrimination.
The lawsuit was started why a 47 year old software developer who was interviewed by the company four times without getting the job.
The settlement also mandated, Alphabet Inc., Google parent company to train employees on age bias, create a committee on age diversity in recruiting and ensure all age-related complaints are adequately investigated.
The woman who started the lawsuit claimed it was increasingly difficult to get jobs due to her age because companies hired younger people due to the current cultural shift.
In Nigeria, companies sometimes require ridiculous age gaps for recruitment. At a certain age, most people are automatically disqualified. In countries with high unemployment rates, age discrimination should be criminalized.
